Is accent modification speech therapy?

No, an accent is NOT a disorder.

Accent modification is not speech therapy. Speech therapy is a treatment for communication disorders such as stuttering, delayed language, and aphasia. Having a non-native accent is not a medical condition, so it’s considered an elective or educational service and not a therapeutic service. It is not covered by insurance but may be covered or reimbursed by employers.

So then why is accent modification offered by speech-language pathologists (SLPs)?

SLPs are experts in the science of speech and communication. We have specialized knowledge of the mechanics of speech, patterns of phonology, and rhythm and melody of prosody. Research has shown that accent modification programs led by SLPs routinely demonstrate measurable gains in intelligibility, reduced perceived accent, and increased communication confidence. So while accent modification isn’t classified as speech therapy, our expertise in speech and language makes us uniquely qualified to provide it.
